The VPM-73 polarimeters used on board Mars 5 are described. Two identical polarimeters having different phase angles were carried on the spacecraft to provide data for studying the structure of the Martian surface soil, identifying its mineral components through laboratory simulation, and determining the content of atmospheric aerosols. The polarization was found to be considerably lower than expected. The maximal values found at a wavelength of 6000 A are slightly more than 9%.
