Star counts were performed towards 9 southern dark clouds situated in the cloud complexes of Vela, Carina, Chamaeleon, Musca, Circinus and Norma, and in the Southern Coalsack, using the ESO(B), SRC-J and ESO(R) plates. Maps of the distribution of visual extinction are presented for each cloud, and the masses contained within different extinction contour levels estimated. The distribution and color indices of the IRAS point sources found in projection to the clouds are investigated. The color indices are used to point out sources which are probable young stellar objects embedded in the clouds; the nature of these objects is discussed; in some cases they are used as distance indicators.
