The 1.4-m ESO telescope at La Silla was used to obtain high-resolution high-SNR spectra of SN 1987A around the Li I 6708-A region. Taking into account all possible correction factors, a primordial lithium abundance N(Li)/N(H) of less than about 0.8 x 10 to the -10th is derived. The present result is consistent with the abundance implied by halo dwarf observations, and it places severe constraints on nonstandard big bang nucleosynthesis theories.
