Sunspot Groups: Motions
Scientific paper
We show that a longitudinal migration of sunspot groups exists. The migration displays features similar to the well-known latitudinal migration, but concerns a smaller proportion of groups, no more than about 25%. The observed migration is not referred to fixed longitudinal (LO) points, but to the floating points where the coronal neutral line of the source surface field overlaps the solar equator on the photosphere. These two overlap points are often longitudinally opposite, about 180° so that sunspot groups often appear distributed in two opposite longitudinal sectors for several months around the minimum of the sunspot cycle.
