The motion of a charged particle in mutually perpendicular electric and magnetic fields is analyzed under the assumption that the magnetic field is plane parallel, single-coordinate dependent, and characterized by strong variation at distances of the order of the Larmor radius. The electric field is assumed to be constant and weak. The adiabatic invariant is determined, motion characteristics are identified, and a comparison is made with motion in a slowly varying magnetic field. It is shown that strong field variation may result in a larger increase (by an order of magnitude) in the particle energy compared with motion in a slowly changing magnetic field, i.e., 'superadiabatic' acceleration is possible in this case.
