I will give a very personal perspective on the issue, based on my own experiences as a student, post-doc, faculty member, center director, academic administrator, and participant in the scientific advisory process. I will focus on my perceptions of existing barriers that inhibit increased participation by women, and possible ways to reduce or remove them.
