The tasks inherent in conducting a SIRTF Legacy Science (LegSci) project are discussed, from the perspective of an approved team of investigators. The SIRTF Science Center (SSC) will provide phased and conditional funding in support of approved LegSci teams. Therefore, it is important for all proposers to understand the nature and scope of activities they will be undertaking in conducting a LegSci project. LegSci teams will be established and funded by December 2000, one year prior to the SIRTF launch. Stage One of the program will last for 14 months, during which LegSci teams will prepare and refine their observing programs, begin to design post-pipeline data processing algorithms and software tools, and gather ancillary data, as needed. Stage Two will commence at the start of SIRTF science operations and continue for a period defined by the proposing team (not to exceed two years). During this intense period, LegSci teams will monitor the execution of their observing program, validate observing strategies, refine their programs, develop post-pipeline data analysis algorithms, and begin to extract science results from their data. Contingent on delivery of applicable higher-level algorithms and software analysis tools, the teams will then enter Stage Three, during which they will deliver final data products to the SSC and to continue their scientific analyses. We will also describe the interfaces between LegSci teams and the SSC that will be important to the ultimate success of this unique and innovative program.
