Measurements of kaon production at subthreshold energies in heavy ion collisions imply a soft nuclear equation-of-state for densities of 2-3 times nuclear saturation density. We apply these results to study the implications on compact star properties in view of the recent measurement of the 2M pulsar PSR J1614-2230. We explore the role of the nuclear matter compressibility and the symmetry energy of nuclear matter for the maximum masses of neutron stars and radii of low mass neutron stars, and especially demonstrate that the heavy-ion data and causality imply a firm upper limit on the maximum mass of compact stars of three solar masses.
