In problems encountered in the theory of the shape of the earth, in space geodesy, and celestial mechanics, the attraction potential of the earth is frequently expanded in series of spherical functions. The latter contain elementary spherical harmonics whose coefficients are the Stokes constants. Since the Stokes constants are certain moments of inertia, they depend on the mass distribution in the earth's body. The influence of terrestrial tides (which change the mass distribution) on the Stokes constants is analyzed quantitatively.
