Isotopic measurements of individual geothermal hydrocarbons that are, as
a group, of higher molecular weight than methane are reported. It is
believed in light of this data that the principal source of hydrocarbons
in four geothermal areas in western North America is the thermal
decomposition of sedimentary or groundwater organic matter.
