Formation conditions of the instability associated with radial perturbations are examined for four models of rotating gravitational systems, including an infinite homogeneous medium, an infinitely thin disk, and a sheet of finite thickness with rigid and Keplerian rotation. The dispersion equation for the sheet is found to be considerably different from that for the disk. Equations are obtained which describe the critical density and wavelength for instability in the sheet, and reasons are considered for the substantial differences in estimates of the critical density obtained by various authors.
