The Ursa Major supercluster is an association of 10 Abell clusters which lie within 7° of each other, and it is the richest nearby Abell supercluster in the northern hemisphere. This paper defines the optical field of the supercluster, presents the results of the SC 10 radio survey, the optical identifications of the SC 10 radio sources, and their relation to the supercluster. Two hundred and sixty-five sources are listed with S(408 MHz) ≥ 9.8 mJy and 48 sources with S(l407 MHz) ≥ 1.7 mJy. Twenty-six sources appear extended and 12 of these are identified with galaxies. Four of the sources have radio-trail structures. At 408 MHz a lower limit of 11 per cent for the identification of unresolved sources has been found, while the total identification rate is 18 per cent. At 1407 MHz, 41 per cent of all the sources have possible identifications. Two other papers are to follow.
