Analyses have been made of fictitious proper motions for velocity fields with, and without, spiral arm kinematics. Dispersions in velocity, distance and observational errors were included in some solutions, and a comparison was made between the mean, the median and the mode, as used for representative points.
Spiral arms yield apparent values of the Oort constants that are algebraically smaller than the true values, a result compatible with recent studies of actual proper motions.
The presence of dispersions increases the uncertainties in the estimation of the Oort constants, but does not produce significant systematic effects.
When using representative points, the median proper motion for a field yields better solutions than either the mean or the mode.
