Effective temperatures, based on the H-alpha absorption line profile, have been obtained for 10 southern beat Cepheid variables, yielding results which are similar to those for single-mode Cepheids of comparable period. The temperatures do not fall exclusively at either edge of the Instability Strip, but rather define a narrow domain related to a predicted region of complex, possibly mixed-mode behavior. Evidence suggests that the beat Cepheids are not mode switching but rather have a pulsational status, not yet theoretically defined, where continuing mixed-mode behavior is possible.
