I reduced the series of observations taken with the NSO/SP Hilltop Hα full disk flare patrol telescope on 1998 May 6. Using local correlation techniques, I derived horizontal surface flows for active region NOAA 8214 from the Hα images. I then compared these with the line-of-sight magnetic flux of the region and structures seen in the Hα images. My research was focused on pre-activity signatures. My analysis of these data has revealed two distinct spikes in the curl of the surface velocity fields prior to activity observed. This result agrees with results obtained by Balasubramaniam, Milano, and Keil (1998) and Keil et al (1999), increasing the amount of evidence supporting the idea that these events are often precursors to later solar activity. My participation in this research was funded by the Research Experiences for Undergraduates program of the NSF and NSO.
