Some of the general characteristics of upflowing beams of protons and oxygen ions one earth radius above the auroral regions, and their relationship to auroral electrons, were determined by means of mass spectrometer and electron spectrometer data from the polar orbiting satellite S3-3. The energies of the two ion species were found to correlate well, and it was determined that oxygen ion energy was on average 1.7 times greater than that of the proton. Ion and electron fluxes appeared to behave quite independently of one another, but were limited in their range. The results of this study suggest that the protons are principally energized by a quasi-static parallel electric field, and that on a statistical basis the oxygen ions derive about half of their energy from this mechanism and the rest from some mass-dependent process.
