The equatorial electrojet signature, defined as the magnetic field magnitude measured at the POGO satellite orbit and normalized to 400 km altitude, is plotted against its contemporaneous, corresponding horizontal magnetic field at a station at the dip equator under the recording satellite. It is found that they correlate well, and that the ratio of the magnetic field to the signature, k, is 2.28 + or - 0.53 in all regions. The vertical component of the field at Ibadan, largely due to the electrojet, yields a value of 2.03 for k upon comparison with the signature. A theoretical value of 2.58 is also computed for k from Onwumechili's (1967) three-dimensional model of the electrojet, buttressing the observed value of k. Previously discordant results have been reconciled, and regional differences in the value of k are no longer significant.
