The extended nature of the X-ray source is one of the best criteria for identifying a cluster of galaxies with an X-ray source. Mechanisms for X-ray emission from an intracluster medium are considered, taking into account thermal bremsstrahlung and the Compton scattering of photons from the microwave background to X-ray energies by relativistic electrons. A quantitative link between the synchrotron and inverse Compton processes in the intracluster medium is presented.
