Review of theoretical and experimental research on the binary x-ray source Cyg X-1 and of theoretical research on the properties of rotating black holes. Gas streaming and accretion onto the companion (white dwarf, neutron star, or black hole) in the binary system are discussed, and the evidence for a black hole is assessed. Superradiance and stability, superradiance and feedback mechanisms, energy extraction from a rotating black hole, changes induced by gravitational perturbations in the orientation of a spinning hole's angular momentum, spin-down or tidal friction, and onset of instabilities are discussed.-
