It is suggested that penumbral waves have a predominantly longitudinal mode of propagation. Hypothetical wave patterns for different heliocentric angles are analyzed, and it is shown that transverse waves should be observed more easily in sunspots situated near the center of the solar disk if the propagation angle has a certain range of values. The hypothetical patterns are compared with actual wave patterns observed in sunspot photographs. It is concluded that the asymmetrical presence of penumbral waves observed about several sunspots tends to support an interpretation in terms of a predominantly longitudinal mode of propagation.
