The hard X-ray and γ-ray bands are important frequency windows for exploring the energetic universe. It is in these energy bands that the non-thermal emission becomes dominant. In order to study the ``non-thermal universe'', characterized by accelerated high energy particles, we need an advanced mission which has orders of magnitude better sensitivity than any previous or current mission.
