The analysis of changes in satellite orbits caused by aerodynamic and gravitational forces as a tool to investigate the upper atmosphere and Earth gravitational field is assessed. While the technique is limited, being incapable of measuring rapid changes density or distinguishing between species of gases, it remains the best way of tracing long term variations in air density, particularly semiannual variations and changes during a solar cycle. Other uses include the provision of scale height for atmospheric models, information on rotation rate of the upper atmosphere, evaluation of zonal harmonics for gravitation studies, and lumped harmonic values for gravity field models.
