Nuclear and kinetic energy of accreting matter are considered as possible energy sources for white dwarf models of the pulsating X-ray sources. It is argued that the rate of kinetic-energy accretion determines the source luminosity, and the equilibrium velocity amplitude of the pulsation is determined. Inverse Compton cooling of accretion shocks is also considered and found to be, in general, a small effect.
