The critical dependence of the superstring-theory coupling-constant time variation on the shape of the effective potential determining the size and cosmological evolution of internal space R6 in vacuum is investigated analytically. The time variation of Newton's gravitational constant for a nearly flat potential is estimated as -1 x 10 to the (-11 + or 1)/yr, a range of values including the present observational upper limit. For a potential with a finite-curvature minimum (due to some unknown nonperturbative supersymmetry-breaking effects) the variation should be unobservable.
