Data from Voyager observations of Neptune's magnetosphere are discussed in terms of general knowledge of the earth's magnetosphere in order to understand its nature. The planetary relationships between the magnetic axes and the rotation axes of several planets are illustrated, and emphasis is given to the large tilt of Neptune's magnetic axis. The interpretation of the magnetosphere illustrated in the paper is discussed in terms of unexpected data regarding the longitudinal variation of the Neptunian magnetic field. The prominent features of Neptune's magnetosphere include a radiation belt confined by the orbit of Triton, the compressed field on the dayside, and the long magnetic tail. The ionized gas sensed by the Voyager within Neptune's magnetic field comprises protons and nitrogen (at 100,000-200,000 C) and protons with temperatures of more than a billion degrees. The implications of the very hot plasma are discussed with reference to the consequences on the material in the radiation belt.
