Recent developments in the field of atomic data for astrophysics are briefly reviewed, and significant changes which have resulted in new electron excitation-rate coefficients for fine-structure transitions are discussed. The effect of these findings on chemical abundance estimates in gaseous nebulae is addressed. It is concluded that the abovementioned coefficients can be increased considerably by resonance contribution. They can be sensitive to the positions of resonances, particularly if they are near threshold.
