The excitation and ionization of helium in hot media with plane-parallel geometry is considered. Equations of ionization balance of the He I atom, the steady state of the triplet system and of the 21P level were solved together with the radiative transfer equations for the continuum at a wavelength of less than or equal to 50.4 nm and the resonance line at a wavelength of 58.4 nm. It is shown that helium is ionized mainly from triplet states by external radiation and electron impacts as well as from the 1(1)S level by the diffuse field of the Lyman continuum with a wavelength of less than or equal to 50.4 nm.
