The Giotto spaceprobe secured in-situ measurements of the dust and plasma environment of comet Halley when it penetrated the comet's inner coma on 1986 March 13 - 14. It obtained much valuable data relating to the physio-chemical nature of the comet's nucleus and atmosphere. Giotto's high-resolution images show the nucleus to be a solid irregular object with a very low albedo.
