It is shown that neutrino detectors can serve as early warning devices for galactic supernovae. Within two weeks of the optical discovery of supernova SN1987, data from the Kamiokande II and Irvine-Michigan-Brookhaven neutrino detectors indicated presence of a significant neutrino pulse at a time which is consistent with the supernova explosion, with the two pulses coincide to within the timing error of the detectors. The number of observed neutrinos was consistent with the number ecpected in the production of a neutron star during a supernova explosion. It is shown that the number of neutrinos which could be detected by the same detector due to a star located only 15,000 light years away would be about 100 times the number detected from SN1987A.
