Due to the change in orbital energy effected by earth tidal forces in binary earth-approaching asteroids during close earth encounters, an initial population of binaries with separations of the order of a few times the sum of their component radii will evolve to a broader orbital distribution encompassing both the increased separations and smaller orbital distances. Of these, the former lead to a loosening of the components and their possible escape, while the latter leads to the creation of contact binary systems. Contact systems have been recently observed by radar.
