The authors reexamine the existing observational data on the very soft X-ray background within the framework of a simple model that accounts for the basic embedded cloud geometry expected in a supernova-dominated interstellar medium. The calculations assume that the interstellar medium consists of two components: a pervasive hot X-ray emitting medium that fills the bulk of the galactic volume, and a cool clumped X-ray absorbing medium having negligible filling factor. The analysis explicitly considers the effects caused by the absorbing clouds being interspersed randomly within the emitting medium. The properties of the background depend on only two parameters: a parameter R given by the ratio of the scale heights of the absorbing and emitting media, and a parameter η that describes the reduction in the effective cross section of the absorbing component caused by clumping.
