The census of nearby galaxies is incomplete particularly for dwarf galaxies. To fill in the census, we have undertaken a survey of galaxies suspected to be nearby on the basis of ground based studies, by using the WFPC2 on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) to image in two filters (F606W and F814W). The survey is an executing Cycle 8 proposal, and operates using the snapshot mode of the HST, where single unscheduled orbits are used to obtain 600 second images in each filter. The high resolution of HST yields observations that give the magnitudes and colors of the brightest stars in these galaxy candidates out to 4 Mpc, as well as the population and characteristics of the brightest and most extended star clusters. We will review the rationale for this survey, the strategy used to obtain data, the target selection, and data reduction. To date, data have been obtained for 33 galaxies mostly from the list of Karachentseva & Karachentsev (1998, A&AS, 127, 409). Initial results for their distances and stellar populations will be presented here and in subsequent papers in this session. The survey is rapidly increasing the number of confirmed nearby dwarf galaxies.
