The characteristics of the large underdense regions in the southern galactic cap detected by the Southern Sky Redshift Survey (SSRS) is investigated. Toward this end, a quantitative method is presented that searches for voids in a three-dimensional galaxy distribution, based on the analysis of a smoothed density function, constructed from the original discrete galaxy distribution. The main advantage of the method is that it yields lower limits for the size of underdense regions and allows the investigation of their geometrical properties as a function of the density threshold. From the application of this method to the diameter-limited sample of the SSRS, it is found that the relatively nearby southern voids have volumes comparable to that in Bootes, indicating that large voids may be a common feature of the galaxy distribution.
