The Johnson and Kingston (1990) results are used to derive theoretical line ratios for Ar III, and these are compared with optical and infrared observations of planetary nebulae. It is shown that this approach makes it possible to investigate the accuracy of the atomic data and evaluate the potential usefulness of optical/infrared line ratios in Ar III as electron density diagnostics.
