The Vela-X component of the Vela radio supernova remnant is commonly supposed to be directly powered by the Vela pulsar. This interpretation is largely based on the apparently flat spectrum of this component. It is shown here that there is no significant difference between the intrinsic spectrum of Vela-X and the rest of the remnant and that interstellar free-free absorption can account for the apparent difference. This and other arguments lead to the conclusion that Vela-X is not directly pulsar-driven but is an enhanced zone of shell emission.
