The various types and classes of known X-ray binaries are described, and the nature of the binary components is examined together with properties of their interaction. Particular attention is given to recent satellite data obtained on high-mass X-ray binaries (including those of the supergiant X-ray binaries and the Be X-ray binaries) and low-mass X-ray binaries. Finally, the class of X-ray binaries containing black hole candidates is reviewed focusing on the value of X-ray signatures for the purpose of identifying new black-hole candidates.
