X-ray, CCD, and image tube optical observations have been obtained for the X-ray source in the core of 47 Tucanae. The X-ray spectrum of the source is best fit by thermal bremsstrahlung with kT = 2 keV. Transient period pulsations and rapid pulsations are found at periods of 120.200s and 4.580 s, respectively. A limiting magnitude U = 17 (Mu = 3.6) is derived for the source. The periodic pulsations suggest that the source is a cataclysmic variable, but the X-ray luminosity and location in the core suggest a low mass X-ray binary. A high angular resolution search for an optical counterpart to the source is recommended.
