A description of the Huygens probe, its mission, and its scientifc payload is given. The Huygens Probe is an atmospheric probe designed to study the atmosphere and the surface of Titan. The objectives of Huygens are to make detailed in situ measurements of the structure, the composition, and the dynamics of the atmosphere of Titan and to characterize locally the surface near the impact site. Since it is anticipated that the probe may survive after the 6 to 8 m/s impact, provision is made in the payload and in the design of the probe to return data on the state and composition of the surface after impact.
