KASCADE is an extensive air shower experiment presently under construction at the Karlsruhe Nuclear Research Centre. The main aim of the experiment is to obtain information about the primary elemental composition above c. 3×1014 eV. The detector arrangement consists of an array comprising c. 252 detector stations each with 3 m2 of scintillation counters for both muons and electrons and a central hadron calorimeter of 320 m2 area with additonal detectors (multiwire proportional chambers) for muons penetrating through the iron. The total area of the array will be 200×200 m2. The basic approach of KASCADE is to measure a large number of parameters for each individual shower.
Extensive Monte-Carlo simulations have indicated that a clear separation of the iron group, the CNO group, and the lightest nuclei should be possible by a combined analysis of various observables. The large number of fast detectors results in an excellent angular resolution, hence KASCADE will also have excellent capabilities for point source identification.
The present status of the experiment setup will be reported and results of some prototype studies will be given.
