The special experimental procedures and the limitations and advantages of laboratory simulations, as well as the quantities that can be varied and measured in the Kometen-simulation research program are discussed. The technical details and the tasks of the large Space Simulator of the DLR in Cologne, Germany, and three supporting facilities are described, as well as the quantities that can be varied and measured in KOSI experiments. The characteristic parameters and the major scientific achievements of the experiments conducted so far are summarized. The ongoing and projected upgradings of these simulation facilities are presented. The opportunities provided by the Space Simulator as a unique facility for experimental solar system physics and as a support for space missions are outlined.
