Attention is given to the major scientific objective of the Rosetta comet-nucleus sample return mission, namely, to return cometary nucleus samples to the earth, while preserving their fundamental chemical, isotopic, and structural properties. Rosetta is to investigate the nature of the raw material of the solar system (interstellar dust and organic compounds) and address the presolar processes in stars and the interstellar medium that created this raw material. The analysis of the most primitive condensed organic material could establish an essential link with the prebiotic environment that preceded the beginning of life. Rosetta provides an opportunity to address the origin of the solar system while bridging the gap to such key issues of modern astrophysics as molecular clouds and their evolution, protostellar nebulae, and sources and sinks of interstellar grains.
