CO, HCO+ and NH3 observations have been carried out towards the dark cloud L1642. The velocity field of the gas indicates a core-halo structure. The mass of the cloud is some 84 Msun. The number density of H2 is ≅9×103cm-3 in the densest part of the core. This study supports the view that L1642 is in virial equilibrium and significantly older than 106yr. The virial equilibrium of L1642 enables a distance determination of ≅200 pc to the cloud core.
