Automation of the quasar and solar observing programs used at the Metsähovi Radio Research Station is discussed. The new solar observing system SMART is a knowledge system which is able to perform (semi-)automatic observations using heuristic rules and parameters as "intelligence". The new quasar observing program CONTOBS performs routine observations but is striving for a user-friendly and effective way of observing.
