A pilot experiment to examine the use of the water-Cerenkov technique for air shower detection as installed near the center of the CYGNUS air shower array. Preliminary results on its response to air showers, that are in general agreement with expectations, are presented. The improvements provided by the water-Cerenkov technique promise to offer significant advances for VHE-UHE γ-ray astronomy.
