The occurrence of galaxies with outer rings and outer pseudo-rings in four different environments was studied. It was observed that outer rings occur primarily in very early type barred galaxies and pseudo-rings occur in later type galaxies. Results indicate that outer rings occur preferentially in early-type barred galaxies and are less frequent in a dense environment. Pseudo-rings tend to occur in later type galaxies and their frequency increases with increasing environmental density. These results suggest that outer rings are a more evolved evolutionary stage than outer pseudo-rings. The observed correlations were further investigated by means of numerical simulations of ring-companion interactions and ring formation in barred galaxies. It is suggested that companions influence outer rings in some galaxies by destroying them or converting them to pseudo-rings. The formation of outer rings in non-barred galaxies is discussed.
