Several European institutions have successfully pioneered the principle of stereoscopic observation of gamma-ray induced air showers as a technique to do very high energy astronomy with the HEGRA instrument on the island of La Palma. Following the success of HEGRA, a next generation instrument, called HESS (High Energy Stereoscopic System), is currently under construction in the Khomas Highland of Namibia.
