We have conducted a deep photometric survey of Abell clusters in the redshift range of 0.02<= z <= 0.04 with the 8k CCD mosaic camera on the KPNO 0.9m telescope. This telescope/detector combination, provides a one square degree field of view, giving an areal coverage of 1-2h-1 Mpc2. The data consist of 27 clusters imaged in the R band with a subset of 11 clusters also observed in the B band. Object detection, star/galaxy classification, and photometry was conducted using PPP (Yee, H.K.C 1991, PASP, 103, 396). Brightest Cluster Galaxies were modeled and subtracted. The galaxy population was characterized by constructing luminosity functions, dwarf-to-giant galaxy ratios and colour distributions. We will discuss the dependence of these quantities as a function of cluster-centric radius, and the implications on the evolution of the cluster galaxy population and the formation of the Brightest Cluster Galaxy.
