Scientific paper

The paper presents a theoretical study of the propagation of a pulse with an envelope of Gaussian shape in an inhomogeneous dispersive plasma with linear variation of the electron density. The frequency modulation law and the shape of the radiated-pulse envelope are determined which assure optimal compression of the reflected signal. The results are of interest in connection with the radio sounding of the ionosphere and the development of short-wave communications systems.
