Satellite data on the external potential and astronomic observations of the position of the north pole indicate that the earth should be treated as a dynamically unbalanced body with a triaxial ellipsoid of inertia. In the present paper, the equations of motion of such an earth are derived; the characteristics of the pole displacements are determined by expanding the earth's potential in a series of orthogonal polynomials. Some features of the free rotation of an unsymmetric earth are identified.
