Results are reported for photographic observations of the giant galaxies NGC 3991, NGC 3994 and 3995 (the pair VV 249), and NGC 4038/39 (VV 245). It is shown that NGC 3991 is a young multichain galaxy consisting of at least six members and that five of these are in very close contact. NGC 3995 is found to be distorted by tidal interaction with its companion, NGC 3994, which contains a chain of contiguous supergiant H II regions. The unique object NGC 4038/39 is shown to resemble NGC 3995 in that both objects lack a normal nucleus and contain a loop of giant H II regions. Possible causes of the fragmentation in these galaxies are considered.
